The Ex Files - 2. Steven Thomson

The Ex Files - 2. Steven Thomson
Steven Thomson joined Rangers on Boxing day of 2002 in a surprise 200,000 move from Dundee United. He was brought in to replace Billy Dodds who went the opposite direction to Dundee United 24 hours earlier.

Thomson came through the youth system at Tannadice. He made his debut for the club as a substitute in a game against Hearts in 1997. He went on to make 162 appearances for United in all competitions, scoring 31 goals.

He never really established himself at Rangers and was mostly used as a substitute. His most successful season for Rangers was the 2004/2005 season where he made 33 appearances in total, scoring 10 goals.

Thomson became surplus to requirements at Rangers and was transferred to Cardiff City in January 2006 in a 250,000 deal having played a total of 85 games in all competitions and scoring 23 goals.

The striker started well at Cardiff and became a first team regular, forming a partnership with Michael Chopra up front. Despite starting a lot of games in his first six months and subsquent two seasons, he never really found goal scoring form with only 16 goals in 101 games.

He was transferred to Burnley in 2008 after making a final 5 apperances scoring 1 goal for Cardiff. His first season at Burnley was quite successful. A much more respectable 11 goals in 45 games was his tally in his first season in 2008/2009.

His contracted with Burnley came to an end, and the striker who is capped 16 times by Scotland (scoring 3 goals) has now moved to St Mirren and will play up front for them in the coming season. So we will likely see him back at Ibrox for the first time since 2006.

I think St Mirren could be a good move for him and I can see him doing well there. He is 32 years old but he has still got a good few years left in him yet.
