The Imps FA Cup Runs

The Imps FA Cup Runs

No one can defend the Imps FA Cup record in recent years, that would be just plain daft. Fair to say you have to have a long memory to remember the last time we made the third round and a glamour tie, losing 1-5 to Crystal Palace in 95 and 0-1 at home to Sunderland in 99. Since the turn of the century we have been dire getting to the second round only 3 times. However in 3 of the last 4 seasons we have managed a replay so things are getting better and just maybe we can go one better this time. At least the dodgy away draws to uninspiring sides one League up seem a thing of the past.

We can never be accused of being perennial giant killers but then again we rarely get hammered and have not been scalped as many times as you would think. Although we got to the fifth round in 1886/87 losing to Glasgow Rangers, our best ever run was actually 8 games, including two replays that took us to the third round in the 1901-02 season, losing at home to Derby. Though we have not covered ourselves in glory over the years for a club of our size and stature we haven't done that badly either historically (well up until recently) reaching the last 16 on 3 occaisions.

Cup milestones.

Round 1 - 36 appearances
Round 2 - 27 appearances
Round 3 - 26 appearances
Round 4 - 3 appearances in 53/54, 60/61 75/76
Round 5 - 1 appearance in 1886-87
Last 16 : 1886-87, 1889-90 and 1901-02

Good memories there for 1975/76. Away to WBA who included Regis, Cunningham, the 2 Browns and a certain Bryan Robson. A cynical Mick Martin tackle on Dave Smith stopped us winning that game. Between 6000 and 7000 Imps fans there that day.
