Vital Report - Rangers 3-1 St Mirren

3 - 1
St Mirren

Attendance: 49,216

Rangers continue to impress, well certainly collect the wins at any rate with Warburton making it played three won three in competitive matches for the Gers when a three-one win over St Mirren was secured on Friday.

This win at Ibrox of course meant the Scottish Championship season started with a win.

Wallace scored in the opening minutes to put Rangers ahead and made it two before the half hour mark. Howieson quickly pulled one back for St Mirren, who could have equalised but Thompson missed from the penalty spot before Shiels secured the points at the death.

Optimism, and excitement, is back at Ibrox with the home crowd boosted by an early goal, St Mirren wanted a freekick for a foul on Baird but this wasn't given and as play went on Wallace smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

McKay could have doubled the lead before Wallace did, put through by Holt the Gers captain ran through to lead the way. A St Mirren reply, and swiftly, was needed if they were to get back into the game and they did this when McMullen found Howieson who beat Foderingham to make it two-one.

Rangers looked likely to add to the goals, chances weren't taken and when McMullen went down under a Tavernier challenge a penalty went St Mirren's way but Thompson skied his spot kick well over Foderingham's bar.

That decisive third goal couldn't be found with chances missed and Ridgers denying Templeton and Law before the unmarked Shiels followed up, Ridgers had kept out an initial effort, to wrap up the point.

Warburton admitted after the game when addressing the media his side 'need to be more clinical' and also need to be 'keeping discipline with pitch geography' after Rangers 'got away with it' with the missed penalty but an all important win to start the season is the main thing.
