Report: Rangers 0 Malmo 1
26.7.2011 / 7:45 PM
A crowd of only 28,828 watched on as Rangers slipped up against Swedish champions Malmo at Ibrox. Rangers went down to a sixteenth minute goal by number 7 - Larsson. No not Henrik Larsson, another one who goes by the name of Daniel.
Rangers now have it all to do against the Swedes away from home next week. The tie is far from over but with an away goal against us it's going to be really really hard, especially the way we are playing at the moment. It's been a horrible start to Ally McCoist's managerial career.
Let's not panic yet though, we are only two games in, ok we have dropped two points in our first SPL game, and we have lost the first leg of our champions league qualifier, but it's not the end of the world. Have confidence in Ally, he can turn it round.
Daniel Larsson scored Malmo's goal in the sixteenth minute after a mistake by Steven Whittaker let him in. Larsson took full advantage of the slip up and smashed it in to silence the crowd, all 28,828 of them, well almost all of them anyway.
Allan McGregor again showed his worth in the second half with two great saves from Brazilian Figueiredo. Naismith, who missed a couple of chances on Saturday, again missed a couple here after Jelavic set him up a couple of times. Clearly the forward has to find some match sharpness.
It was a dreadful showing overall there and a lot of work for McCoist to do to turn this one around and to get Rangers back on track generally. Someone called it right tonight on a phone in I was listening to... If McCoist continues to play Edu and McCulloch together in midfield, Rangers might as well hand the title to Celtic.
I couldn't agree more, the team isn't big enough for both of them, in fact it may not even be big enough for either of them but at least one of them has GOT to drop out. I would drop Edu who has been dreadful for the last year.
I hope the cheque book hasn't been put away just yet. I would say we badly need a new midfielder. I think we've got to get David Goodwillie in as well. If Dundee United want £2 million then give them £2 million, just get the boy signed up, he's a talent and would form a great partnership with Jelavic.
