Versatility Has A Cost Even If It Gets You On The Pitch

Andy Halliday declared on his arrival at Rangers that he'd play in goal if necessary for his boyhood club and two years later the midfielder is now at left back.

With 83 starting appearances to his name along with a further 14 from the bench following his arrival from Bradford City back in the summer of 2015, having fallen out of favour under Pedro Caixinha and saw himself loaned out to Qabala - well that was less than successful as the player admits himself.

He was however brought back by Graeme Murty when he took charge and the 26 year old made his first start for the club in the midweek clash against St Johnstone, and having not started a game since April last year, he couldn't care less that it was at left back.

Speaking to the Official Site he explained that although there were drawbacks to being considered versatile, it was a privilege to take to the pitch for the club.

'Firstly it is up to me to perform to the standard to stay in the team and secondly I don`t know what is happening in terms of personnel with Declan John and Waldo (Lee Wallace). They are two specialist left-backs, two boys who have had an impact in their Rangers career so far. I am happy I have an opportunity if I am in there just now and it is up to me to keep the jersey while they`re out.'

With an Old Firm clash on the horizon, he was obviously looking forward to maintaining his spot for that one should the gaffer choose to call on him, but he also spoke about the versatile tag at this part of the interview.

'If I manage to play in the Celtic game it will be a massive occasion for me and one I will certainly relish. That word versatile can sometimes be a bit of a burden because you don`t get a run in certain positions but I will never complain wherever I play for this football club, it is a privilege to be here and a lot of boys feel the same way. I am 26 now and in my career I have played a few different positions so it shows I am capable of doing that but it`s not about just being there it is about hitting form as well.'

He went on to say.

'How the game went made it a lot easier for me playing there on Tuesday night, it is my first game for a long time so I felt the effects after the game. It made it a lot easier how well the boys did and we were excellent in the first-half, especially that sort of 30 minute period where we got the three goals."
