Warburton On Morton Victory

Warburton On Morton Victory

Manager Mark Warburton was pleased to see Rangers bounce back from the three one defeat to St Johnstone the other day by sticking four past Greenock Morton the other day.

Speaking to the Official Site after seeing a Martyn Waghorn hattrick (the first of his career) with another goal from James Tavernier, a pleased Warburton said it was simply on to the next one now because he wants to open up a 12 point gap at the top of the table if he can.

'I had no doubts about Martyn when we bought him, he just needed to play football - he needed to play games and get better and better. I still feel there is a lot more to come from him and his second goal was clever and the penalty was clinical, he is a very talented player and in my eyes he`s only going to improve. We spoke to Nathan about taking on players one-on-one, when you get the likes of Barrie McKay and Nathan running at you at pace it`s hard to mark and to play against and you get your penalties. It`s not chance for Waggy, he practices every single day, I have to call him in off the training field and he is clinical in his finishing.'

Warburton said it's the same for all players, it's about hard work and application and acting like a proper professional and when you do that you get the rewards like Waggy is at the moment - especially with his return of 14 goals in only 13 games.

'We look around at the results over the weekend and points were dropped and now we play Falkirk, who are nine points behind us, and if we can deliver a good performance and get the right result we will be 12 points clear. It is with good daylight that we go into it and the first run of games has been really pleasing for us, we have points on the board and we`re in good shape so we`ll keep pushing on.'

Warburton went on to say about our opposition on the day - fresh from beating Premiership Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup.

'I`m really pleased because it is a tough place to come here and they had a good result in mid-week and they are well organised and they have a very experienced manager and some good players here. I thought the first 25 minutes we were really good, we got a couple of goals and we were threatening. We were a little bit sloppy at times but we reacted well after that and the players would be the first to say that but overall it was a really pleasing performance. It was important to win again, we`ve played 13 games and won 12 and if somebody offered you that at the start of the season I`m sure you`d take it.'

Warburton ended by again saying that whilst he knew he sounded like a broken record, he was going to repeat that some of the criticism levelled at the side recently was very harsh indeed following the start to 2015-16 we've had, but the players hadn't let that affect them, they kept working hard and we got another deserved result on the back of it.
