Warburton - We Must Be More Clinical

Warburton - We Must Be More Clinical

With six goals scored against Hibernian, and another three today against Peterhead, manager Mark Warburton has demanded the side become more clinical as the season progresses.

Speaking to the Official Site following today's Scottish League Cup victory at Ibrox, courtesy of goals from Templeton, Miller and Tavernier, Warburton explained at full time that he felt given the chances we created on the day we should have won by a larger margin.

'It could have been more, and the team have absolutely done their job, but Peterhead sat in and made it very difficult so we had to be patient. I`m really pleased though with our attitude and the way we kept moving the ball, but if there is a criticism then it is that we weren`t clinical enough in front of goal, but our work ethic was tremendous. It is important that we get the just rewards for the work we are doing. We should have been more clinical and should have been rewarded more, but we`ll work on that and hopefully improve in the weeks ahead.'

As for the overall performance on the day, he admitted our quality was 'good' but only in patches, but he knows it's a process and it takes time given all the changes - including his own introduction to the club - so he wasn't going to be overly concerned by that because the positive is the players are taking on board what he wants and starting to put it into practice on the pitch and obviously more pitch minutes mean natural improvement.

He also picked out Kenny Miller for his efforts after being introduced as a substitute.

'He has undoubted quality, and he is a hungry footballer who wants to play, and he will really have a big role for us to play this season, so I`m delighted with his contribution against Burnley, against Hibs and again today, scoring goals and making a difference. All over the park - I look at Martyn Waghorn for example. He didn`t get his goal today but he had a tremendous game all over the park, as did Templeton and McKay. It`s difficult when you ask wingers to take players on and take risks in the final third as it can be frustrating at times, but they never stopped looking for the ball or stopped being positive. So I`m delighted with so many performances and a good result too of course.'

With the Championship opener on Friday now on home soil to St Mirren, Warburton added.

'I`m delighted with our fitness - you saw that we were still going strong in the 90th minute there, so our levels are good and we`ve come through the five games unscathed. We`re in good shape and we look forward now to Friday night.'
